French Butter Bell / Crock
This Butter Bell is a perfect housewarming gift. A wonderful keepsake for members of the wedding party, or a special gift for the hostess with the most-est!
A little history about Butter Bells:
A French butter dish is a container used to maintain the freshness and spreadable consistency of butter without refrigeration. This late 19th century French-designed pottery crock has two parts: a base that holds water, and a cup to hold the packed butter which also serves as a lid.
Here’s how it works:
1. Using softened butter, fill the bell. Always fill with softened butter, not melted or hard.
2. Fill the base with about 1/3 cup of water.
3. Pop the bell into the base and the water level will rise around the bell, sealing it off and keeping it cool. Change the water every two to four days to keep things fresh.
4. The butter should stay fresh and nice and soft is stored away from direct heat or sunlight.
Dimensions - approximately 3.5 inches in diameter and approximately 4.25 inches tall including knob handle.
